These Strawfoot Handmade Insulated Window Covers for the 5th Gen 4Runner are a game changer if you travel in your truck for more than your weekend getaway and instead find yourself sleeping in your vehicle and don’t want people peaking in and seeing you or your valuables.
As someone who regularly travels across the country in my truck, often I can find myself in areas where it just doesn’t make sense, or I am unable to simply pop my rooftop tent and go to sleep. That’s where these come in real handy. Low-E insulated, and covered with rip-stop durable fabric like you would find in duffle bags, these hand-made insulated covers come in several different colors for the inside material, and black on the side that faces the window. With magnets embedded and sewn in their edges that cling to the stock window frames, these covers simply stick in place perfectly against the window to create a completely light blocking cover that also keeps the truck extremely warm in winter, or stay cool in summer. Best part is, they fold up and stow away neatly, and they only take about 1-2 minutes to deploy all 7 and even less time to break them down. The back 2 port rear windows do require a metal strip to be double-side taped along the edge to allow those covers to stick. All the other windows in the vehicle require no modification to work right out of their package.
So far, I’ve been able to use these covers for around 3 months now and have slept in the vehicle using them in mostly the dead of winter. The coldest outside temperatures so far I’ve used them in was down to -10°F (-23C) and with a 15°F sleeping bag I was literally so hot that night I had to take off my long sleeve to avoid sweating. So yes, these work tremendously well at keeping the heat inside. But my favorite use of them so far, has to be for the privacy aspect which makes boondocking in places where I would normally be worried about sleeping at in fear of getting spotted and kicked out no longer as big of a risk or fear in my mind. With tinted windows, these make the windows from the outside completely opaque thanks to their black backing and extremely close proximity to the window that creates a uniform cover that is easy to look over at a glance. Even when I roll up somewhere and its dark out but I want to maybe work a bit or perhaps watch a movie to wind down, no light leaks can be seen from the outside at all to allude that someone is inside- no matter how many lights I have on or screens blaring at me. Someone could literally shine a flashlight right against the window from the outside to try and see in and they would see absolutely nothing. Which is definitely ideal for someone trying to lay low and not bother anyone or let them know they are sleeping in their vehicle there for the night.
Even for added security from smash and grabs, these are great at stopping opportunity theft from occurring on your truck because no one can see in at all from any angle. If there’s nothing valuable to be seen, often its not worth the risk for the thief. Additionally, these covers help keep your fridge cool if its on a slider or drawer like mine is. When the sunlight hits the fridge, it heats up and uses more energy off my battery, so by blocking it and keeping the space cool, it helps mitigate my energy consumption as much as possible. Also the pup seems to like the shade when it gets hot too! I’m still finding useful new purposes for these even months after owning them.
Although these covers can run on the high side of mods and add-ons coming in at $800 for the complete set, I’d say these are worth it if you are someone like me who uses their truck for a lot of time out of the year and would be using them consistently for multiple purposes. I know I’ll find myself reaching for these every day and night I’m on the road to keep me warm and safely hidden when
I need to be, so I really couldn’t be happier with them.
